RECYCLING IN THE COMMUNITY
Recycling rates in West Sussex are among the best in the U.K. thanks to the progressive collection and processing facilities run by West Sussex County Council. Plastics remain the most problematic waste to recycle and Greener Cuckfield volunteers help address this in various ways in the community, at local businesses, and within our schools.
Queens Hall
You can drop off some everyday plastic waste items at the Queens Hall for recycling. These do not include items that can be put in the Council Blue Recycling bins. Please see below for lists of what items we collect at the Queens Hall and do not leave anything there that is not on the lists. Please also make sure that any items you leave are empty, dry and loose.
These plastic waste items below are sent to Terracycle https://www.terracycle.com/en-GB/about-terracycle/ to be recycled and turned into new products.

Local Businesses
Crisp packets in pubs
You wouldn’t believe how many packets are generated in our four pubs! Pub service staff now regularly collect and set these aside and we do a monthly “pub crawl” to collect them and take them to the Co-op Store at Whitemans Green. They are then sent within the UK to be processed and turned into new plastic products, such as playground equipment, watering cans and dustbins.

We wanted to make sure that the soft plastic we collect does not end up dumped abroad so we asked Becky Griffiths (Co-op Communications Manager, Sustainability) what happens to it.
We would love to support more of our village businesses to increase the amount they recycle. There are lots of schemes for businesses like hairdressers and dentists as well as beauty salons. If you are interested in one of these schemes, please get in touch.
Recycling at Schools
We collect old pens, glue sticks and soft plastic from Holy Trinity Primary School.
Also…
We have supported village events like the Queen’s Jubilee Street Party where we helped direct people to the right bins, greatly increasing recycling rates. And to tackle “wild waste” we organise community litter picks.
